After gathering your name suggestions for our furry friend, and voting on names, we have a name for our mascot: môswa
The name means moose in the Cree language. môswa is pronounced "moo-SWA", with the emphasis on the second syllable. Click here to hear how to pronounce it.
Since EALT operates in Treaty 6 lands, and we acknowledge that Indigenous Peoples were the original stewards of these lands, we thought (and so did you) that this name for our mascot would be fitting way to pay tribute.
Moose are found on all of EALT's Conservation lands. We see signs that they've left behind, including scat, tracks in the snow or mud, and browsing on shrubs. We also sometimes catch photos of them on our wildlife cameras, and occasionally get an in person meeting too, but usually from a safe distance.
Moose are the largest member of the deer family, and are amazing creatures with many adaptations for living in a variety of habitats and climates. Click here to learn more about moose in our Species Spotlight.
