Stacking Stones

Stacking stones can be harder than you expect! Get outside with a friend and see who can build the tallest rock tower. A tower of stones is called a cairn when it is used to help guide the way along a trail. Keep an eye out for cairns the next time you go on a hike! In the meantime, practice your stacking skills with rocks of different shapes and sizes. Maybe you can show the way for the next traveler on a hike!

What you’ll need:

  • Rocks, stones, and pebbles

What to do:

  1. Find a spot by a river or stream that has many rocks around. Or, go on a walk through a forest to search for rocks there.

  2. Start stacking! See how many rocks you can stack without the tower falling over.

  3. Challenge your friends by choosing rocks for each other and that you must try to stack on your tower.

  4. Come back to your tower after a few days. Is it still standing?

Ask yourself:

  • What kind of rocks work best for the bottom of the tower?

  • Where could you build a cairn to help others find their way?

  • Where can you find rocks other than next to a river?
