We are building a medicine garden on our recently secured North Saskatchewan River Property. This property is being reclaimed through tree planting and planting native plants. As a conservation site within our land trust this site will be conserved and protected in perpetuity.
This project is being planned and implemented in collaboration with: Papaschase First Nation Association Band 136, Enoch Cree Nation Office of Convention and Governance, Boyle Street Community Services, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Bent arrow Healing Center, Native Healing Center.
The primary purpose of the garden is to have a location in a natural environment that is accessible to the above partners.
The garden will also provide medicine for smudging and protocol used in our programming and outreach with Indigenous organizations/governments. It will be open to any Indigenous visitors to our lands.
Tasks
We are ready to plant the medicine garden at our site by the North Saskatchewan River, and we need your help! We have 135 sacred medicine plants to plant in the garden. During the event, we will complete a smudging ceremony, plant about half the shrubs, and finish with a tour of the land. It is not required to participate in smudging but please be respectful of others wishing to participate.
We will meet at our North Saskatchewan River Site at 10:00 AM and leave the site by 3:00 PM. The site is near "The Estates at Blackhawk". The exact location of the site and directions will be shared closer to the day of the event.
This event will be somewhat labour intensive, including digging and kneeling to plant shrubs and forbs. If you have your own gloves and a garden trowel to bring we recommend that you do so, but otherwise tools and gloves will be provided. Additional information will be sent to you several days in advance of the event.
