Snow Volcano

Try this winter version of a classic science experiment! Make a baking soda and vinegar or Mentos and coke volcano in the snow is a great way to get outdoors in the winter and to get excited about science.

What You’ll Need

  • Baking soda & Vinegar OR Mentos and Coke

  • Red Food Colouring (optional)

  • Snow!

What to Do

  1. If you are using Mentos and Coke, head outside and place the coke bottle on the ground. Build up snow around the coke bottle to make it look like a volcano.

  2. If you are using baking soda and vinegar, add 2 cups of vinegar, 1/2 cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of dish soap to an empty bottle. You can also add red food colouring to make the vinegar lava-coloured if you would like. Place the bottle on the ground and build up snow around it to make it look like a volcano.

  3. Prepare your fuel! If you are using Mentos, open up the end of the package and prepare to dump them into the Coke bottle. If you are using baking soda, add an equal amount of water to turn it into a liquid that can be easily poured into the vinegar bottle.

  4. Add the Mentos or baking soda to the bottle and watch your volcano erupt!

Ask Yourself

  • Did the snow around the volcano melt? Why or why not?

  • Where in the world do we find real volcanoes? Can they have snow on them?

  • What other science experiments could you try doing outside?
