Connect to Birds

Photo by Kassia J - visitors at Larch Sanctuary

We are excited to announce our first Conservation Connections Event - focusing on birds at an important time of year. At this Connect to Birds event, participants will explore this conservation land and see its importance for habitat connectivity within the region for breeding birds and for birds migrating further.

Pipestone Creek Conservation Land overlooks the meandering Pipestone Creek as well as an oxbow lake. It supports moose, deer, and many other types of wildlife, and is well frequented by visitors who enjoy the peaceful scenery. It is also prime habitat for migrating birds, who may stop to rest and forage among the willows or along Pipestone Creek itself.

This event is anticipated to take place during the peak of songbird migration. We hope to see many species of warblers, sparrows, thrushes, and others, and maybe see a variety of waterfowl or shorebirds on or along the creek. So grab a pair of binoculars, and come join us!

What to Expect

  • Pipestone Creek Conservation Land is south of Edmonton near Wetaskiwin, within 1.25 hours driving time. Parking is roadside on the shoulder. If you wish to carpool, please review our Carpooling Policy here.

  • We will meet at the trailhead and start promptly at 9 AM. The event will end at 12 PM. Participants are welcome to stay at the land past the event.

  • The event will explore up to 5 km of trails. Trail conditions include wide, mowed grass trails, and at times uneven terrain. This land is mostly flat as it is top of bank above the Pipestone Creek.

  • There will be occasional stops throughout the event.

  • This event is best suited for adult audiences, but families with children are also welcome. Please contact us in advance if you wish to bring young children.

  • Some binoculars are available to use, but we recommend bringing your own if you have them.

  • To allow for the best chances of seeing birds up close, please leave your pets at home.

A reminder will be sent to participants with further information and direction to the meeting point. Spots are limited, please register on the Canada Helps page.
