A newly secured land is in need of some assistance! This parcel of land lies along the bank of the North Saskatchewan River, upstream from Big Island Provincial Park in an Environmentally Significant Area. Over the next few years we aim to restore the environmental health of the area, which includes invasive plant management and a variety of other restoration efforts.
We’ll be focusing on managing invasive plants that have established on the land. Removing invasive plants helps ensure that our ongoing restoration efforts will be successful, and it’s an important step towards fostering an environment where native species can thrive. We’ll also do a bioblitz during the event, to give everyone a chance to see the diversity of wildlife that the land supports already!
We will meet on location promptly at 9:30 AM, and leave the site by 2:30 PM. The worksite location will be shared with registrants well in advance of the event. We are not advertising the location yet, as we still have a lot of foundational work to do before opening the site fully to the public. The land is in the general vicinity of Bunchberry Meadows, and takes roughly 40 minutes to get to from west Edmonton.
Accessibility
Anticipate a medium level of physical exertion for this event. Activities will include:
Roughly 2 km of walking over flat ground with uneven footing
Using hands and hand tools to remove and trim invasive plants
Carrying garbage bags of weeds
Carrying personal supplies for the day (water, layers, snacks, etc.) in your backpack
Wear appropriate footwear and long pants, and bring a lunch, water, and a camera or binoculars if you'd like. If you have your own gloves to bring we recommend that you do so, but otherwise tools and gloves will be provided. Additional information will be sent to you several days in advance of the event.
